The Faith of Abraham    Sunday, 27 November 2011 Speaker Name:  Ryan Krause   |  Hebrews 11:8-16 Series:  By Faith Description:  Today Pastor Ryan brings us part 4 in our "By Faith" series: The Faith of Abraham. Often we have heard people say "You just gotta have faith" when we are going through hard times. This is a nice statement usually made by good intentioned people, but have you ever wondered exactly what they meant? "Just having faith" really means nothing unless we have something to place our faith in. That "something" is actually a "Someone": Jesus Christ! Sometimes this means stepping out of our comfort zone and doing as Abraham did: Going to a place God will show us." This means we will not always know what is around the next corner. However, we can have absolute confidence in the One who made the corner! Pastor Ryan will bring us three points to help explain what true faith is; a willingness to obey, a willingness to wait, and a willingness to sacrifice. He touches on two areas of scripture today: the first in John 11:5-6, where he explores the use of the little word "so." In this passage Jesus is told that Lazarus is dying and yet he tarries for two days. Many would ask, "why"? If Jesus loved Lazarus so much, why did He not drop everything and go to him? We will find the answer in verse 40. God has our life under control, our life is in His hands! Do you trust God? In Hebrews 11, we begin to see what faith is, the substance of what we hope for, the evidence of things not seen. By trusting a certain God in uncertain times we will be amazed at the things God does in our lives. Nothing is safe about being in the center of God’s will...but paradoxically, there is nothing more miraculous than being in the center of God’s will!

When someone mentions the word church to you what comes to mind? The building? The people? Perhaps good memories or some not so good memories? Some feel they don't need to be in church to be a Christian. It is crucial that each of us as believers are plugged into some kind of fellowship, surrounded by like-minded people who can encourage, guide, and in some cases, correct us. Think of your walk with Christ as an ember in the fire. While you are part of the fire you glow and create heat. Once you are pulled out and set aside, your fire smolders out. A great example of the church is seen in Ephesians 2:19 where we see the Chief Cornerstone (Jesus), the brick & mortar (the people, the living stones) being the true definition of the church.
